Feel Good Hit Of The Summer

Richard Cartwright

1. Pains of being pure at heart S/T

Sounding like a modern day Jesus and Mary chain. This record from start to finish
leaves a smile on my face with every play.

Stand out track - The Tenure Itch

2. Why? – Eskimo Snow
The soundtrack to my weekend away in Sunny Brighton.

Stand out track – Even the good wood gone

3. Cymbals Eat Guitars- Why there are Mountains
From the opening track “and the hazy sea” the record demands your attention. Mixing the lo-fi
sounds of Pavement and Wilco makes sense to get this record.

Stand out track- some tress (merit moon)

4. Bibio- Ambivalence Avenue
Wolverhampton based Bibio aka Stephen Wilkinson has created one of the most diverse sounding record’s I have heard in a long time sounding across between Boards of Canada, J Dilla, Four Tet , Nico and watching heartbeat on a Sunday afternoon while on holiday in Wales.

Stand Out track- Cry! Baby!

5. Anathallo- Canopy glow
Saw them in New york very jet lagged and they made me cry.

Stand out Track- All the fisrt pages

Richard King
1. Pheonix - Wolfgang Amadeus Pheonix

Uplifiting summer songs from the French answer to The Strokes. Dancey tunes fileld with summer imagery and lush synth sounds.

Stand Out Track - Lasso

2. Arctic Monkeys - Humbug
Recorded in New York and Josh Homme's Joshua Tree Studios it combines elements of psychadelica and 60's pop with Alex Turners intertwining stories.

Stand Out Track - Secret Door

3. Jarvis Cocker - Further Complications
Infectious tunes that range from bluesy to disco. Great lyrics as usual from Jarvis. A personal favourite, 'He says he loves you like a sister, well i guess thats relative' (Leftovers).

Stand Out Track - Angela

4. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
I doubt i even need to say why, so i will just say, Masterpiece.

Stand Out Track - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

5. Leonard Cohen - Death Of A Ladies Man

Great songs full of beautiful orchestration and feel good doo waps. Produced by Phil Spector.

Stand Out Track - Memories

Nick Cave Novel

Nick Cave of The Bad Seeds, Grinderman and The Birthday Party fames first novel since the gothic and critcally acclaimed novel 'And The Ass Saw The Angel' (1989) is entitled 'The Death Of Bunny Munro' and is due to hit the shelves on September 3rd (i have got a copy a week early due to a Waterstones ordering blunder, win) published by Canongate.
The novel deals with Bunny Munro, a middle aged lothario whose constant womanising and alcohol abuse comes to a head after the suicide of his wife. A travelling salesman, he and his son go on an increasingly out of control road trip across Brighton, over which looms the shadow of a serial killer making his way towards Brighton, as well as Bunny's own mortality.
Nick Caves novels have a lot in common with his songs with traits such as dramatic imagery, murder, sex, religious themes and references all which dominate Cave's writing history. I hope it lives up to the high expectations cast after the praise of his previous novel, though im sure as Cave's illustrious career shows it will be everything and more.

The Northwestern

The Northwestern are a London band that features ex-Hope Of The States singer Sam Herlihy whose lyrical and vocal talent sound as good as they did those many moons ago. The drummer is also from the same band. The Northwestern still have vauge similarities to the Hope Of The States which is inevitable really, However these songs are a lot more feel good and accessable.

The have released one single to date on July 15th on a 500 Limited Edition 7-Inch. Double A-Side Telephones/All The Ones. All The Ones is a poppy tunes including 'na na na's' somethign so far away from what Sam Herlihy has done before. Telephones is a feel good song, perfect to soundtrack a city at night.

You cant catch them at many live dates around the country this month, if you miss them i wouldnt be too worried as they keep touring at the moment. They also support the Editors at the 02 Academy on September 10th.

New Music

Bill Ryder-Jones will be familiar to most of you for his work in The Coral. The Guitarist left after Roots & Echoes and is now going solo. His solo work displays his talents for songwriting with less focus on his echoey psychadelic guitar work. His songs range from Syd Barret esque to Nick Drake. You can find his solo work which consists of some great demo's under the name Film Music. It will be a great suprise as his songwriting is as impressive as his guitar skills.

Wolverhampton University Freshers

So Out Of Step is booked for Wolverhampton University Freshers week on Monday 14th September. Should be a great night of celebrations, great music, new people and drinks.

We look forward to it.

New Julian Plenti Video

Julian Plenti's new video 'Games For Days' was premiered on Spinner today. The Video co-stars Emily Haines of Metric along side Paul Banks. The video is fantastically directed by Javier Augilera who is reponsible for the great piece of modern cinematography. The plot is thought provoking with Paul Banks playing two parts, ill let you read into it what you like. It seems now Paul Banks is following in the acting footsteps of fellow Interpol member Carlos D.

Brand New

Brand New are set to release their follow up to 'The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me', an album that made Alternative Press claim 'America finally gets their own Radiohead'. Their new album is titled 'Daisy'.
Jesse Lacey (Vocalist, Guitarist) commented upon the new album "It's a pretty exhausting record. It's quite dense and I think some of the decisions we made don't always go in the most obvious direction. We were thinking a lot more about what we'd want to play when we were up onstage rather than actually what you'd want to hear on a record."

Julian Plenti Is... Skyscraper

Julian Plenti is known to most people for his part in New York post-punk group Interpol. This is his first solo effort and a very average one. Paul Banks explores a wider sound bringing in beautiful Orchestration on 'Skyscraper' and 'On The Esplanade', he also shows a poppier side on the electronic and brass filled 'Unwind'. However ambitious this album is in parts, the lyrics are very weak at times. 'Girl On The Sporting News' is particularly poor with the cringe worthy lines 'Girl on the sporting news, I just wanna tell you one thing, you've got the kind of sex appeal, that doesnt get a guy like me down'. There are a few obvious Interpol-esque songs such as the first two on the record with strong rhythm sections and dominant bass lines. The single 'The Fun That We Have' is full of catchy rhythms and lyrics. Its an interesting record by Paul Banks and shows another side to his musical abilites however it is brought down by its very poor lyrics.
7/10
'Julian Plenti Is... Skyscraper' out 3rd August.

There's a storm on the horizon
