London trio Not Cool have called it a day. Yesterday on the bands facebook page they announced the following split

Hi
Due to various circumstances including personal development, self loathing and various godly epiphanies we have decided to ‘call it a day,’ quit, split etc. We would like to thank everyone who put our songs out, bought a record, paid to see us play, shrugged their shoulders, said kind words or danced to our music.
We’ve been banging our heads against a wall for tooooooo long.
On Friday 18th of November we’ll be playing our final show. Details to follow.

Not Cool were our first London band who were willing to travel to sunny Wolverhampton and play one of the best set's we have ever seen. How did Swim Deep come about?

Me and wolfgang spent our time in our frees at college smoking weed talking about how it would be dope to be in a band, in a girl etc,

So we talked about it and then we sang about it.

For a band based in the West Midlands where did the fascination for the beach and waves come from?

We want to escape this Midlands/English bullshit, and who doesn't? no one wants to be in the fucking rain, none of us can surf, only one of us has a tan, and thats heridetry, we just dream of that kinda shit man, not waiting at a bus stop without encountering some dying old bloke on search for a nicotine rush. We wanna get away, far away.

Musically how does the writing process work? I understand you're very DIY with recordings using i-phones etc?

only one of us can afford an iphone man, but yeah, we write our music all together, usually someone, anyone, maybe austin, writes some gnarly riff then we all roll to that, if we had money we'd be fucking rich, but until then...

Favourite song in your set to play live and why?

We always love playing white witches, because its the end of the set and were all high of whatever, it goes down well, and we all go down well.

Future releases for Swim Deep?

We're recording all this bitter winter, with Dom Ganderton, a good mate of ours, we'l release that shit in jan/feb... expect some hazy crazy, were really looking forward to releasing the new vibezzzz.

Bands to look out for?

there's a lot of dope music at the moment thats new to some much anticipated ears.. yuck, gross magic, te3th, blood orange, tribes and our bros peace and is tropical. OH and The Wanted fucking rule.

Skate or play music?

Skating is just one big fucking laugh, we dont take ourselves seriously at all there. wheras music, playing music, is euphoric. if your going to skate to any oozik though, its always jurassic 5.

Part of the Cold rice collective Vinny and the Curse, this is John on his own, playing what sounds like The Oblivians fronted by Nick Cave, with some Tom Watts thrown in there. We asked John a few questions; if you like a 'getting to know you' before he plays for us at the Male Bonding show.

When did the solo project start? How,when and why?

I started playing on my own about 6 years ago when i was living in Liverpool, there was no where to rehearse as a band, so i just started writing on my own... I Picked up a guitar at a party and just so happened to play in front of a promoter and most of Liverpool's music scene..... I got a few good gigs

What's your main influence when it comes to writing?

Love and loss...

Want it, got it, got it, want it.

Will it be a full band or just yourself on the 27th, which one do prefer on your own or with a full band?

I'll be playing with my band
I do think i prefer playing with a band, more energy, more eye contact..

Dum Dum Girls are bringing out another Lp due on 27th September entitled 'Only In Dreams' on Sub Pop records.

They recently brought out the brilliant E.P 'Gets me high' at the start of year and was a small taste of things to come bringing more Shagri-Las harmonies and haunting vocal's from the stunning Dee Dee.
We really can not wait for this record to drop and even more rad news is the UK tour. It has Wrexham Central station on the tour. That show on the 16th will truly be a memorable one.

Q and A with Conan Roberts ( Italian beach Babes label and Mazes)

Conan Roberts runs Italian Beach Babes he put's out some of the radist records and tapes by bands like Fear Of Men, Graffiti Island, Dirty Beaches and many more. He plays bass for Mazes and is from Oswestry. Caught up with Conan before Mazes hit the road for a U.S tour.

What made you start up IIB records and what advice do you have for those who are just starting up their DIY labels

I managed to blag a box of about 200 cassettes from a studio that was chucking them out a few years back. They sat around for quite a while and it was around the time Male Bonding, Pens and Graffiti Island were all starting up. So each band get a couple tracks recorded and i made 100 cassettes with those 3 bands on. I just dubbed them on the cassette played i had at the time. They came out really quiet and i even managed to make about 20 copies play completely backwards.

There so much truly AWFUL music getting released now days, especially in London that it kind of feels like a duty to put out some bands who i think are great and believe in.

How did you get involved in bands vids you seem to have all creative fingers not just on the bass right now?

Well apart from being in bands and doing the label I freelance as a cameraman/ video editor. Its what I studied and have done as a day job for a number of years. I worked at MTV for a while and have always been massively into music videos. So I guess its kind of natural to be involved in making a few ourselves. To be honest though, as much fun as it is it is also a total nightmare most of the time, makes you NO money and there is very little recognition for your efforts. I would dissuade anyone from getting into them!

You played Off Set with Graffiti Island last year will their be anymore show’s/Records in the future?

Ha yeah. We recorded 4 new tracks at the end of last year but Pete is still to put the vocals on them. I think when i get back from this Mazes tour we may work on them a little and try get them to a point of being released. As for anymore shows I don’t know. Everyone is very busy with other stuff but if the right show comes along we may do it.

A band to look out for right now?

In my eyes there’s a wave of great new bands coming out of London right now. There seemed to be this little scene around 2009 of like Male Bonding, Fair Ohs, Graffiti Island Pens etc. Everyones kinda progressed a bit now, split up or got on bigger labels, doing LPs etc which is amazing but its really nice to see younger kids doing new amazing bands and starting to play shows. Id say there’s a few of note

What’s been the most proudest moment so far for you?

As a label, im just super proud of everything i put out. Im never gonna put out a band im not totally into so im proud of everything. Its great to see other people into it too and kinda follow the label and trust that if i put a record out there gonna like it just cause its on IBB. Kind of like labels such as Dischord, Burger, Art Fag etc the music is varied but generally its always amazing. Also recording and playing in Mazes has been unbelievable. Its nice to take a step back now n again and appreciate what we’ve done as a band, doing an LP people love, playing all over the world. Im super happy with it and really proud of all of us in the band for making it work together.

And the worst?

If you had to choose Skate or music?

Right now, music. Its facilitating me not having a proper job and travelling the world. Skateboarding will forever be one of my main passions but to be honest my knees are fucked and its getting harder and harder to skate everyday.

I see your from Oswestry what was your experience like music wise growing up there? How did you get records,hear new stuff.

I had a great time. My entire musical background is tied into skateboarding and my youth there. Watching skate videos and finding out what songs were on them then scouring record stores to get the records. I had no Internet then so it was all just looking at linear notes in records, finding fanzines etc and asking older guys.

Through skating pretty much every weekend id get on a train and travel to either Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool or somewhere to skate and buy records. I remember always hitting Tempest in Birmingham and getting so much US Punk stuff every week. That’s where I bought all my first US Hardcore records.

Best Pizza Restaurant ever?

Well I’m no Pizza snob, there is a pizza place opposite my flat. Yesterday I picked up a 12" with 3 toppings for £4. Its so cheap its amazing. But I’m looking forward to being in Chicago in a week or so and getting a proper deep pan there.

Mazes are crazy busy right now it looks as tho you are playing everywhere .You looking forward to heading back to Us and how do they compare to the UK show’s?

Yeah so excited for the US tour. I love being on the road and touring. If it were up to me we'd be doing a hell of a lot more but its not so I have to take what i can get. As Mazes we only played in SXSW before so haven’t really done any proper US shows. The venues are all pretty big as the tours with White Denim so I’m excited for a whole bunch of new people seeing us and having bigger stages to wander around on.

Beastie Boys- Ill Communication (Got me into so much amazing music from Hardcore to Hip Hop to Jazz, i saw them in '94 with my dad and i can still remember it to this day)

Prince- Love Sexy (Prince was the first gig i ever went to on this tour, i was 11 and had my mind blown)

Minor Threat- Discography (got into this after Beastie Boys covered Screaming at a Wall, changed my whole outlook on music and life leading me to be straight edge for 8 years and spend most of my 20's driving around the country to hardcore shows every weekend)

Lungfish- Indivisible (I first heard Lungfish on Consolidated skate videos. Scott Bourne would have their tracks on his sections regularly and it always struck a chord with me. Took me a while to track down any of their records but as soon as i did it was an instant obsession. Its hard to pick a favorite as all 9 albums are equally perfect.)

Mazes- A Thousand Hays (Ha, kind of weird picking your own bands record but being in this band has changed my life and made it infinitely more fun and interesting)

Milk Maid - Yucca

Milk Maid are from Manchester and a breath of fresh air in a sincere DIY way.
There debut 'Yucca' is out via Mazes Jack Cooper's label 'Suffering Juckbox" and 'Fat Cat" next week. For fan's of Nine Black Apls this is for you due to the main vocals being by Martin Cohen the former bass player.

Cohen recorded all the track's in he's flat so you can't get anymore lo-fi then that without trying.I'm sure many will compare this to the Southern drenched sound's of Black Lips but for me Milk Maid stand alone with their Northern charm. Like Spectrals it's honest and to the point and sure to be a Summer long player.

The history of Apple Pie are a five-piece based in London. First time I heard them was at the Weird Dreams E.p launch. They sounded great in the small venue The Victory, live it's like Teenage Fan Club or Sonic Youth with a more added blissful wall of noise. The Les Savy Fav support show i think was Bombergs first ever gig and the first time i heard them.
And for a band that had only just started they sounded pretty good.

Rick who is one sound dude was once in Green Cables a fine band to i may add.
With Bombergs their a fast assault of good vibes. In sound reminiscent to The Replacements and XTC.

At present their is only Slow hands Clapping with a chorus hook that will stick in your head for day's. The band are just starting up and playing show's around Birmingham alongside putting on night's via Song and Danse .

A peaceful side to the Criminals

So November and the Criminal have dropped their shoegaze noise and found a tropical beat in the form of PEACE. November played last year at Out Of Step and we were blown away by their wall of noise.

With PEACE the clue is in the name a more mellow approach.

Not much is written on them at present with only a few Demo's on blog's and Tumbler's. Their debut demo BBLOOD is a crisp clean sound. Mixing influences of early Kate Bush, Grace Land, Fool's Gold and Is Topical minus the beats and bleeps.

Ever since i read about upset the rhythm in Plain B magazine i just thought it was the radist thing.They put on so many good show's and put out so many great records.In all honesty i get a musical boner just thinking about them and the bands they showcase.

Q and A with Chris Tipton

1.
Upset the Rhythm has been going strong for 6 years now ( i hope I'm right). Has your approach changed to the way you run the live events and is it easier?

I think after the first few events where we spent a lot of time learning how to run things, trail and error so to speak, we struck upon a good way to run shows focusing on making the band and audience happy and equals. It's important to us to always try out new things, especially when concerning venues and support ideas though, when you get bored, everyone does.

How the hell did you get you get Deerhoof to play your first one?So rad you got them.

This was surprisingly easy actually! It was before Deerhoof had much profile and we were just a bunch of Kill Rock Stars nerds who desperately wanted to see them play in London, no one else wanted to put on the show and we realised if we were ever going to see them we should just get on with it and book a show ourselves. So Claire from UTR shot Deerhoof's booking agent an email about our intentions and to our delight we were given a green light and set up a show for them. We'd never done anything like this before but we pretty much live by the maxim nothing ventured nothing gained. In a lot of ways this show is still the template for what we do now, just follow your heart.

Would you take UTR to another place or country?

We've done a bunch of Upset shows in the US, namely New york, Texas, Los Angeles and San Francisco in collaboration with like minded promoters such as The Smell, Todd P and Club Sandwich who all see things in the same light of enthuiasm. Other than that I suppose when we book tours across Europe we try to work with promoters with a similar ethos.

What’s been the most proudest moment for you so far?

Woah - too many to mention, certainly releasing each record, our recent 300th show and our undying commitment to Trash Kit who last month played with their heroes The Raincoats and in doing so completed a lifelong ambition. I know this might sound lame but also whenever we meet someone inspired or appreciative of what we've tried to do over the years it's makes it all worth while. Being part of a community that didn't exist when we started makes us feel like we've achieved something worthwhile.

What’s been the worst moment for you so far?

Everytime I forget the UTR banner and need to work all the way home to get it, we are very superstitious and without its grimy presence we fear unhappy consequences.

Who does all the art-work for posters and shows,do you just let them do what they want and go with it?

I make the majority of them and they are usually inspired by knowing the band's music well and by knowing many of them as people now, I'm a stickler for the making a poster I know will make the band laugh or draw on something they'd appreciate. I'm not an artist in any way but somehow I can make vaguely decent posters that people respond well too. We're also lucky to work with a number of great illustraters who often cold call us and who far outweigh my expectations every time.

Can you name a up and coming band to check-out out..

YES! too many, I don't wanna bore you to death, I'll make it simple and just give you one from the UK > No Womb from Manchester who sing deleriously of choas and the female way, it's multitude of joys and also pains.

Miles Bradley and us would like to know if BARR are doing another Lp?

We're in touch with Brendan and at the moment BARR is on hold, he's working on other music/performance pieces and is also achieving considerable success in the artworld too. We cross our fingers daily.

Your from Shrewsbury which is not a bad place it once had a Virgin which was the only place to get good stuff from, oh and an MVC which was more then Oswestry had. Anyway did you find like me you really had to dig hard and when you did find something truly great in the mass HMV racks it was like Indiana Jones or something. What was your experience like growing up there music wise?

Well this was very much a time pre-internet believe it or not. We used to spend an ordinate amount of time in the post office sending off for fanzine to find out about new music and also of course filling many weekends with trips to Manchester and Birmingham primaily for their independent record shops and helpful staff. Shrewsbury for all it's boredom certainly made us understand that if you wanted something really great to happen you only had yourself to rely on, the DIY spirit of UTR was born in the Old Post Office drinking abode and "entertainment" room of Shrewsbury town centre on many a night. I think now it's so much easier to find out about music online that I can sleep at night considering our forebears in proud Salopia and even in MVC once I found a Melt Banana CD!!!

For a up and coming D.I.Y night like us any words of advice?

Have as much fun as possible, only organise a show if your heart is in it. Don't feel pressured by people telling you it's stupid and try and make everything as fair as possible, if that means paying bands well or keeping ticket prices reasonable, if you have any questions at all ask us at any time.

What are the three records that changed and inspired your life so far?

OK tough question, first record I bought obviously which was They Might Be Giants (sorry!) - Birdhouse In Your Soul 7", um something gateway like Nirvana or Aphex Twin or Sonic Youth or Mogwai, you know those records which pull you deeper into the realms of musical obsession, and finally of course our first 10" mini LP by Death Sentence: Panda! Glorious as UTR001, our happiest child, I can't believe we're nearly 50 releases old now!!

Well we are now one years old. And what a great day of celebration it was for all who came down. All I can say is the next birthday will have to be just as good.

So for those who are friends with us on Facebook you will have received the recent message about the Not Cool + The Heebie Jeebies show may be are very last in the city were it all started 'Wolverhampton'. This is indeed true,we are re-locating most of are show's to Birmingham.But a massive thank you to all the Black country heads who came to our show's and made them all rad.We will do some show's in Wolverhampton again maybe later in the year. It's just right now alot of act's we are booking are playing Birmingham.
